What are the Business Registers?

How we can help you manage your business

The Companies Office administers New Zealand’s statutory registers and is the authoritative source of business information in New Zealand.

We enable businesses to form, and help them to meet their ongoing legal obligations.

There are four broad categories of registers, of which Business Registers is the largest in terms of the number of registers.

The Business Registers ‘family’ includes Charitable Trusts, Credit Unions, Friendly Societies, Incorporated Societies, Limited Partnerships (New Zealand and Overseas), and the New Zealand Business Number (NZBN) registers, to name a few.

Some of these registers can be accessed directly by visiting businessregisters.govt.nz.

Increasingly, more of the tasks necessary to establish and maintain business entities can be done online, and with the adoption of the New Zealand Business Number (NZBN), more business information is readily available to those who need it.
