How to apply to remove your credit union from the Credit Unions Register. The information and documents you need to provide when you apply.
Note — The Registrar can also remove your credit union from the register in certain situations (for example, if it amalgamates with, or transfers its engagements to, another credit union).
Grounds for applying for removal
You can apply for removal from the register if either of the two grounds for removal exist.
- The credit union has:
- ceased to operate, and
- discharged in full its liabilities to all its known creditors, and
- distributed its remaining assets to those persons entitled to them or otherwise in accordance with its rules.
- The credit union has no surplus assets after paying its debts in full or in part, and
How to apply
You will need:
- a RealMe® login, and
- confirmed authority with us to update this credit union.
If it is your first time updating details for a credit union, you will be prompted for information to set up an online account with us.

Step by step
- Log in using your RealMe login.
- Select 'Authorities' from the menu.
- Choose your credit union from the list.
- Select ‘Create Filing Service’.
- Choose ‘Request for Removal’ (for the type of service).
- Upload your written request for removal.
- Submit your request.
What happens next
We will send you an email confirming that your request has been submitted. We will then review your request and contact you if we have any questions or need any further information. We aim to complete our review within 10 working days and we will confirm the outcome by email.
We will publish a public notice
We must give public notice of any credit unions that have requested removal from the register. We do this by placing notices in the:
- New Zealand Gazette (under Removals), and
- News and notices section of our website.

Wait for any objections (if any)
Once the notice has been published, there will be a period to allow for any objections to the removal of the credit union. Anyone can object if their objection is for a reason defined in Section 140B of the Friendly Societies and Credit Unions Act 1982.

Remove the credit union from the register
If we receive no objections the credit union will be removed from the Credit Unions Register. Its details will still be visible on the register, but its status will show as 'Removed'. We will also email you confirmation of the removal.
