How recent law changes affect screen industry organisations

An overview of the Incorporated Societies Act changes and what they mean for your screen industry organisation.

From 6 April 2026 there is one Act that incorporated societies need to comply with in New Zealand; the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 (2022 Act).

The 2022 Act came into force on 5 October 2023. Incorporated societies had 2 years and 6 months to reregister and change from the Incorporated Societies Act 1908 (1908 Act), to the 2022 Act. That transition period has now ended.

To qualify as a screen industry organisation, you must first be registered as an incorporated society. This means that screen industry organisations are affected by the changes the 2022 Act brings.

Registered societies are now governed by the 2022 Act

All registered societies must now follow the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. We have updated the guides on the Incorporated Societies Register website, so they now only cover the requirements of the 2022 Act.
